The Family Check-Up Offers Big Impact for Brief Intervention
Strengths-based programs gives OHP families skills to prevent behavior issues
EUGENE, OREGON – (February 2, 2017) – “The Family Check-Up” is a strengths-based intervention that offers parents simple, practical parenting skills and can be tailored to the specific strengths and challenges of each family. The program helps parents address the challenges of parenting before problem behaviors develop, reducing the risk factors that contribute to adverse childhood experiences.
Research with thousands of families from diverse economic and cultural groups, has demonstrated that strengthening parenting skills and creating nurturing environments are the most cost-effective ways to improve behavioral health outcomes both in the short and long term.
The Family Check-Up is offered to Oregon Health Plan (OHP) members with children 2-18 years of age through a collaboration of Lane County Prevention, Trillium Community Health Plan and Family Mediation Services. Family Mediation Services is a division of Lane County Health and Human Services. Trillium provided funding for training and support of staff that work with Trillium families during sessions.
“Family check-up helps create happy, healthy family relationships and well nurtured children,” says Caitlyn Jackson, Program Supervisor for Lane County Family Mediation. “Early data demonstrates positive outcomes with 99.4% of participants reporting the program helped them see their strength as parents and 91% saying the program gave them realistic ideas for making changes in their family.”
OHP Parents can sign up by calling: 541-682-3962 ext.2.
How it works:
Parents or guardians attend a series of three appointments with a mediator from Lane County Family Mediation. During the initial appointment, parents meet with staff to share information about their family, identify challenges they’re facing (e.g. unstable housing, family conflict, income loss), and identify goals. During the second appointment, parents work on age-appropriate tasks with their children in a video-recorded session. During the final appointment, parents meet with staff to review clips, identify strengths and areas for improvement.
One parent shared, “I’m working on being more patient and staying calm during stressful times. The sessions helped me see my strengths as a parent that I had not been seeing myself.”
Since 2012 Trillium has set aside $1.33 per Oregon Health Plan member per month to fund programs that prevent chronic disease and help Trillium members live healthier lives. During that time Trillium has contributed more than $6 million to prevention programs in Lane County targeting tobacco use, obesity and mental health.
